Alibaba and Chinese suppliers can be a gold mine or the worst mistake of your business. The difference is knowing how to spot the warning signs before you transfer a single dollar. This guide comes from our experience verifying suppliers in China.
The 5 most common scams
1. The ghost company
A professional website, a flawless catalog, incredible prices… and behind it there is no factory and no inventory. They disappear as soon as they receive your deposit. Warning sign: prices far below the market and pressure to pay quickly.
2. Stolen photos
They use images from legitimate manufacturers but ship lower-quality versions — or something completely different. Warning sign: they refuse a video call showing the product or the factory.
3. Forged certificates
They present ISO or CE certificates that are not registered with any official body. Besides the fraud, this can get your goods held at customs. Certificates must always be validated at the source.
4. The change of terms
You agree on a price, transfer the deposit, and suddenly «the cost of material went up» or new charges appear. Your money is already in their account and you have little room to negotiate.
5. The perfect sample
They send you an excellent sample, but the full order arrives with much lower quality. Without an inspection before shipping, you find out when it is too late.
How to protect yourself: checklist
- Verify the company’s business registration in the official registries of its country
- Research their reputation: reviews, history on B2B platforms, references from other importers
- Demand a video call from the factory, not from an office
- Validate certificates directly with the issuing body
- Never pay 100% upfront: negotiate partial payments against verifiable progress
- Hire a physical inspection before shipping
Other quick warning signs
- They write from free email addresses instead of a company domain.
- They ask you to transfer to a personal account instead of a company account.
- They accept no form of protected payment.
- They change the company name or bank account at the last minute.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to pay through Alibaba? It is safer if you use the protected payment methods the platform offers and avoid paying outside it. Even so, always verify the supplier.
Is an inspection worth it? Almost always. It costs far less than receiving the wrong or poor-quality goods.
