Exporting from Peru to the United States is possible for companies of any size, but you need your documents in order. This guide summarizes the most common ones. Exact requirements depend on your product, so always confirm them with the relevant authority or your freight agent.
Commercial documents
- Commercial invoice: describes the product, quantity, price and sale terms.
- Packing list: details packages, weights and dimensions.
- Contract or order confirmation with your buyer.
Transport documents
- Bill of lading (B/L) for sea freight or air waybill (AWB) for air freight.
Procedures in Peru
- Have an active RUC (tax ID).
- File the export declaration with customs, usually through a customs agent.
Requirements by product
Some products need extra documents. For example, food usually requires health certifications and registration with the US food authority; agricultural products may require a phytosanitary certificate; and some products need a certificate of origin to access tariff benefits.
Practical tips
- Define who pays freight and insurance (Incoterms) before closing the sale.
- Label your product according to US rules.
- Ask for quotes from more than one freight agent.
